Pilates Mat Classes
Our 55 Minute Pilates mat classes concentrate on internal aligmnent and strengthening work done both standing and lying down. We begin with decompression exercises lying down in the constructive rest postition to alleviate back pain and the stresses that habitual movement patterns place on our bodies daily. The exercises are weight bearing and improve balance, posture, core strength, aerobic capacity and flexibility. The classical Pilates method emphasizes precise alignment and efficient sequencing of movement. The mat classes are suitable for all fitness levels but the Gentle Pilates classes are modified specifically to clients with low bone density and back pathologies as well as those individuals who are new to exercise. We emphasize the importance of somatics, breath work and imagery in achieving everyone's individual fitness goals.
Internal Alignment Awareness (IAA) Classes
IAA is a modified Pilates sequence developed by Penny Shure based on The Meeks Method and the contraindications associated with osteoporosis. It is a basic series that is a safe and effective way to build core strength even if you have spinal stenosis. The exercises are safe, gentle, and flow from one to the next in fluid transition. Beginning from the position of least (supine) to most compression we learn how to re-align and strengthen our cores and increase our aerobic capacity through breath awareness and imagery. We end up standing, balancing and walking with Internal Alignment Awareness, improved posture and a deliberate understanding of where our bodies are in space.
